Upgrading and Repairing PCs has a long and venerable history of being the most comprehensive PC hardware guide available. However, personal computers are one of the fastest growing technologies in existence today, and a quality reference guide must keep up with the latest developments. The Tenth Anniversary Edition is easily the most complete revision that this book has undergone in its long history. A great deal of obsolete material on early PC hardware has been excised (although it is still provided on the CD-ROMs included with the book) and an enormous amount of new information has been added.
At over 1,500 pages, this is the largest edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs ever, and many of the latest technologies are covered in great detail, including:
- All of the latest processors (including the Pentium II)
- New memory technologies, such as SDRAM
- New motherboard form factors, such as ATX and NLX
- The latest motherboard chipsets
- Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)
- 3D Graphics Accelerators
- Universal Serial Bus (USB)
- Mass storage devices, including DVD-ROM, writable CD-ROMs, Zip, and Jaz disks
- Printer technologies
- Portable PCs
- Windows 9x and Windows NT
- FAT32 and NTFS file systems
My contribution consists of two new chapters, "Printers" and "File Systems and Data Recovery," as well as updates of the following chapters:
- Chapter 6. Power Supply and Case
- Chapter 7. Input Devices
- Chapter 8. Video Hardware
- Chapter 9. Audio Hardware
- Chapter 11. Communications and Networking
- Chapter 12. Magnetic Storage
- Chapter 13. Optical Storage
- Chapter 14. Portable PCs
- Chapter 16. Building or Upgrading Systems
- Chapter 17. Diagnostics, Testing, and Maintenance
- Chapter 18. Operating Systems Software and Troubleshooting
